Teagan (00:00):
So in this episode we talk about our personal life and everything that goes on behind the scenes behind the VCC business owners. And let me tell you, it is not for the faint hearted. We've been through a lot of heartache, a lot of juggling, a lot of teenage dramas, and just making sure everybody's happy and healthy is definitely a full-time job. So have a little listen and there is a trigger warning in this one. So just beware.
Krystal (00:36):
What a time,
Teagan (00:37):
What a time. As we're sitting here at the Intercontinental Hotel in Adelaide from your recommendation, they do a good buffet breakfast, don't they? Krystal Great
Krystal (00:45):
Buffet breakfast.
Teagan (00:47):
Uh, we've had a huge couple of days. We've had meal prep record week without a sale this week. We hit the 7,000 meals, over 7,000 meals and 738
Krystal (00:57):
Orders
Teagan (00:58):
This week, 38 online orders, which is epic. And we had a photo shoot with Fable and Fig to get some meal prep content because it's so important to have good fresh content for our, um, meal prep brand catering brand, and now the Nibble + Splash brand. So that's all underway and we have a bit of a content night. I feel like it's good to work away from work sometimes, isn't it?
Krystal (01:22):
Oh, absolutely. Just gives you so much clarity. No interruptions.
Teagan (01:26):
We get extra time to chat about things that is gonna take everything to the next level without getting asked a million questions at the cafe or going home, having the kids and yeah, trying to chat on the phone in between getting the kids ready for school or picking them up and after school sports and stuff like that. But yeah, so I thought we'd do a bit of a four to six week recap on what it's like behind the scenes in our lives.
Krystal (01:51):
Absolutely. Take the business out of it. Just a couple of mums.
Teagan (01:56):
It's bloody next level is what? It's crazy. <laugh>. So I'll start it off with basically we're gonna go from the start of August till today. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. My sister bought a cafe. So
Krystal (02:07):
Exciting.
Teagan (02:08):
So exciting. So Jenna is, she's worked for me for the past probably four years.
Krystal (02:16):
Yeah. Close to,
Teagan (02:16):
Close to. And before that we had the family business, the Lordly doc. So she's always been a hospo baby like me, but for her to take something on herself and just take the risk and dive in, I'm just so proud of her. And so we were bowls deep helping her with that for a little bit, weren't we? <laugh>? So I was painting walls and you were helping her set up her square. So that was the start of the month. And mum Leanne, she worked for me full time and she's now gone to work for Jenna with my blessings. So that was a bit of a transition. We had to look for staff and Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. Yeah. Make sure mum knew that there wasn't gonna be a family rift if she left <laugh>.
Krystal (02:58):
<laugh>. Yes. Yeah, it was, um, it was an interesting time actually. It, it was, it was bittersweet. It
Teagan (03:05):
Was very
Krystal (03:05):
Bittersweet. You saying goodbye to your friends and your family that you work with. But you know, it's for bigger and better things.
Teagan (03:11):
Yeah. And I love going down there now for a coffee and just checking in and seeing how she's going. So that was that. That was a very big couple of weeks. And while that all happened, my Grandma actually passed away, which is my dad's Mum and she's the matriarch of the hospitality side of our family. She was the one that with my granddad, they bought the restaurants and the hotels and she was just such an inspirational woman and strong and just boss her way through it all. And I think that's where we all get a lot of our, you know, strength from in hospitality and just the risk taking. So we said goodbye to her around the same time, which was a very hard time for our family. But you know, she was older and she'd had a good life and she went without pain. So it was, it was a beautiful send off. And then all of that, you had your sister's story in between all of that as well.
Krystal (04:05):
Yes, absolutely. So all this was going on and I became an auntie for the first time on my side of the
family, which is just being an auntie is amazing, but then having your sister have a baby is just a next
level experience. It's unreal. And I was so, so proud of them all. However, there were a few challenges
along the way. Little Elliot was born a couple of weeks ago and we found out that he had a disease called
Hirschberg's disease, which required him to have surgery. The poor little thing wasn't even 48 hours old, I
don't reckon. And he got rushed up to the women's and children's hospital here in Adelaide and they were
just unreal. They took such good care of him and my sister and her partner Ben. And he's finally home
now recovering. He actually has a little stoma bag, which is all fun and games for them getting used to as
first time parents. But they were just amazing through it all. It was just a quite scary experience at the
start. But the resilience that they both shown as first time parents and just, yeah, proud big sister watching
'em. Yeah.
Teagan (05:12):
It would've been so difficult for you all, but it was good. They have actually risen to the challenge. Mm-
Hmm. <affirmative>. And as confronting as it is, you know, they're gonna get through it. And the medical
science these days is just incredible, isn't it? Oh,
Krystal (05:24):
It's unreal
Teagan (05:24):
To know they have a chance with something like that. It's
Krystal (05:27):
Just, oh, to operate on just, and all the other little babies there in like the NICU and like the special care
nurseries, just all the staff there, they just do amazing things. Mm-Hmm.
Teagan (05:39):
That's unreal. And yeah, it's just amazing how your life can be turned upside down in a heartbeat. You
never know what's around the corner. But they've risen to the challenge and we're sending lots of love to
them today. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. And with a family like you, I'm sure they'll get through it. No
problemo. Oh,
Krystal (05:54):
Absolutely.
Teagan (05:55):
And hopefully the reversal is in the near future. Yep.
Krystal (05:59):
Yep. But no, he's doing well. He's home now and I get to enjoy little baby nephew cuddles. It's awesome.
Teagan (06:04):
Little snuggles. Yep. Oh, I love
Krystal (06:06):
It. So yeah, that was a pretty full on few weeks to start the month. Oh.
Teagan (06:09):
Um,
Krystal (06:10):
It was, and that's not even the half of it really, is it? No.
Teagan (06:12):
We'll do a little bit of a kids update. Hey. Yeah. Our crazy clan. So we've had, well when I got back from
Darwin, I went to Darwin first of all. Yes. <laugh>. We had the, the Racing Carnival in Darwin, which is
an annual thing for us. And Ethan and I always try and get away without the kids and forget about all of
our responsibilities. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. We try and do something every month, if not every few
months. And it's just where we can reconnect and have time with our friends and just remember who we
used to be. I know you did the Crown Plaza with your sister for her birthday as well. Yeah. Went to the
Carlton game and they nearly lost against Northwell, but
Krystal (06:50):
That, let's not talk about it.
Teagan (06:52):
Oh yeah. We are pretty fanatics over here. So you're already working out how you can get to Brizzy for
the Carlton final.
Krystal (06:57):
Oh gosh, yeah. If anyone knows me, I'm a diehard Colton supporter. And the last 48 hours of the final
round was just, yeah.
Teagan (07:05):
Don't you mean the last eight weeks, <laugh>. Oh,
Krystal (07:08):
It's been a lot. It's been a lot. Yep. So that's on top of our little, you know, personal life update here.
Teagan (07:14):
Yeah. <laugh>. Yeah. And I'm a port power supporter, so I'm pretty chuffed right now. <laugh>. Um, but
so when I got back, Jazzy had surgery. She just had the adenoids and grommets put in because we've been
having trouble with her falling behind in school. And the teacher said, have you ever had her ears
checked? And I hadn't because I'm just used to yelling at her. <laugh> <laugh>. So I did that and went to
the audiologist and she had so much fluid in her ears, they didn't even know how she could just hear
normally. So we've fixed all of that up. She's also got doctor's appointments throughout the whole year to
get tested for ADHD. Yep. Her educational checkup, dyslexia, all of those things, which is so, so
common now. And as a mum, like you just, you want the best for them. And I don't see really anything
wrong with her, but I just feel like if she's falling behind, I really have to get on top of her and just get her
the support that she needs. And I know that's how, what's happening with Tyler as well, isn't it?
Krystal (08:10):
Oh, absolutely. We did the same thing. We had audiology appointments, um, a bit different to jazz. He
has a thing called auditory processing, but I was exactly the same as you. They don't listen when you talk,
so you gotta yell. <laugh>. Turns out they might have a few other things going on. <laugh>. Yeah. But
we got all of that sorted. He's seen the audiologist. He actually also got glasses too. He has some
stigmatisms in his eyes. So his eyes are shaped like footballs. Not like basketballs. Oh yeah.
Teagan (08:42):
Well they look normal.
Krystal (08:43):
They do <laugh>. So yeah, just a few little things to help him out with his learning. I've got kids quite
close together, so I have a daughter who's just the year below him and she's already leaps and bounds
doing his work and more. So we thought we better get on top of it and see
Teagan (09:01):
How we can help him. Abby's just supersonic smart though.
Krystal (09:04):
She is, but she, um, isn't smart enough to not jump off the top of a two story playground and just about
concuss herself. So because
Teagan (09:11):
She got told to, she
Krystal (09:12):
Got told too. Yeah.
Teagan (09:14):
She's still got a black eye.
Krystal (09:15):
It's, it's getting better. <laugh>. I mean, I didn't have to do makeup for book week's a dead So <laugh>,
Teagan (09:21):
She's a daredevil for that one. And Cruze. He's just loving his footy at the moment. Ethan's the coach and
he's, he's my child that just flies onto the radar. There's never anything really wrong with him. It's just,
you know. Well he is got anxiety <laugh>
Krystal (09:38):
Like his mama.
Teagan (09:39):
And by by anxiety I mean that one day Ethan went down to the shed and he thought that everybody left
him and he was hiding under the bed with his sister. And now he's got like trauma from being left alone
<laugh>. So you wouldn't know that there's no, but it's just like, you remember when you had him and
you went out to the car?
Krystal (09:55):
Car?
Teagan (09:56):
Yes. And he's just like, oh my God, where is everybody? Where did you go? Like I couldn't even hang
out the washing for a while without him going like, mum, mum. Like now if I'm going outside the house,
I have to say Cruisy, I'm just taking the bin out and I know that it's something that he'll get over. But it
just goes to show that something so simple with Ethan just going down to the shed 'cause our shed's quite
far away from the house. Mm-Hmm. Boys, men don't think of this stuff. No. Whereas I would never do
that. I'm just like, guys, I'm just going down to the shed. Would you like to come with me? Or you know,
so something like that can actually really mess with their little brain.
Krystal (10:29):
Oh, the things that kids hold onto. It's
Teagan (10:31):
Crazy. Well Abby doesn't sleep when it's raining.
Krystal (10:33):
No
Teagan (10:34):
Drive. Neither do
Krystal (10:35):
You. I could drive, I could drive a freight train past ahead when she's asleep, but two drops of rain and
she is up.
Teagan (10:41):
Oh. And that's funny. And then, and then we've both got eldest. Eldest sons. Oldest sons. Yep. So Jacob
turns 17 in two days.
Krystal (10:49):
That's crazy.
Teagan (10:50):
That is crazy. We go and pick up his car today. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative> his new car that he's saved up
for. And we've had driving lessons, we've had the whole saga of what car should he get and fighting over
the fact that he shouldn't get a V six Commodore and he should get a little something that can't get very
fast.
Krystal (11:10):
Yes.
Teagan (11:10):
Um, because we live in the country as well. So I wanted to have a bull bar for the kangaroos. Yep. Cheap
on fuel, all of that. But I must say I'm just so proud of that. Boy, you remember all the stress I've been
through with him. Oh, so different
Krystal (11:23):
Kid.
Teagan (11:24):
Different kid. Different kid. So he is from a previous relationship, I was in a relationship with somebody
before Ethan and I had a, a son, which is Jacob. So his upbringing has been just, he's just rolled with it.
He's never been any trouble at all. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. But you know, he's obviously been through
some struggles not living with his dad and we've had to like go through all of those motions. But he was
at school and as you remember, he was very, very naughty at school. <laugh>. I took him, I had to pull
him out of a couple of schools because he was just getting caught up with the wrong people and doing the
wrong thing. And then I thought, you know what, I'm don't have time for this. You can go to work. Yeah.
And we've given him an apprenticeship and just being around our inspirational meal prep crew that like to
save money, they like to stay fit, they like to work hard during the weekend, do good things on the
weekend. Like he has,
Krystal (12:17):
He's thriving right now. You
Teagan (12:18):
Do. It's who you hang around. It's literally who you hang around. And at school, he didn't have a choice.
He just was driven to the people that weren't academics or didn't have much drive. There was a whole
vaping saga, which I'm sure most moms out there would.
Krystal (12:34):
Oh, if you have a teenage kid, you've got vaping, sagas,
Teagan (12:38):
You've Exactly. And so, and then he would just like, there was a couple of times where he left the school
to go get food out at Hungry Jack's or something like that. And I'm just like, mate, like you can't do this
stuff. But you can't tell teenage boys sometimes. No <laugh>. So anyway, he's been working with us now
for probably at least a year, you reckon?
Krystal (12:58):
Oh yeah, definitely. Over a year I
Teagan (12:59):
Reckon. And he has lost 26 kilos and he's done it in the right way. I'm talking, he started football,
Krystal (13:08):
He started basketball,
Teagan (13:09):
He started basketball, he's going to the gym and doing weight training. He's eating so much food, but it's
the right food. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. And he's saving money. He's managed to save up enough
money to buy a really nice car. I've only put in one and a half thousand dollars towards a $13,000 car,
which is unbelievable.
Krystal (13:27):
He is got drive about him now
Teagan (13:28):
He's got drive. So I'm just having a proud mum moment right now. Mm-Hmm. Because I thought I was in
dire straits. I was, didn't know what to do. I'm kind of by myself in this as well because he doesn't have
much to do with his dad anymore. Like he does, but he is just, yeah, he's, he's not the voice of reasoning
like I am. So yeah, that's that. So if you've got a teenage child and you think all hope is lost, think again.
Krystal (13:52):
They do come out the other
Teagan (13:53):
Side. They do come out the other side and you just have to not give up and just keep telling them the right
way. You know, you, you know they're gonna up sometimes, but there's just, you just gotta keep at it.
Yep. So yeah, I'm taking him to Bali for his birthday next week. <laugh>, <laugh>, any excuse we do.
Krystal (14:12):
Hey, it worked and you saved his money and
Teagan (14:14):
Yeah. Do you know what? I think it's gonna be nice too because it's gonna be one-on-one with the little
kids. Like I didn't have the money or the means to be able to do something like this when he was the
younger kid's age. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. So I'm gonna do this and it might be the last time we do
something like this together being 17. Yeah. I don't know when he is gonna find the love of his life. I
don't know when he is gonna move out. So we're gonna be able to, while
Krystal (14:33):
He wants that time. Yeah.
Teagan (14:34):
While he wants it. And he's so excited. Mm-Hmm.
Krystal (14:36):
<affirmative>. And I think just as a is so important that we go out and we spend one-on-one time with our
husbands. It's just as important if you've got more than one kid to try and spend that one-on-one time with
each of your kids as well.
Teagan (14:48):
I agree.
Krystal (14:49):
It's a sacred time I think.
Teagan (14:51):
And they just remember. They remember it. Yeah. Core memory. So that's the kids' kind of update, isn't
it? Yeah. How's Hudson going? All good.
Krystal (15:01):
He's good. We're still doing the learner driver lessons too. Saving for a car. We're about four, five months
away from the 17th birthday, so we're about to do the driving lessons with the instructor and go car
shopping, but it's just gone so fast.
Teagan (15:16):
I know.
Krystal (15:16):
Blows my mind.
Teagan (15:17):
They're not babies anymore. No, I know. Cruz even said to me the other day, I'm gonna be in high school
in two years or something like that and I'm just, what that is No, because high school's year seven now,
isn't it? Yeah. But yeah, we're gonna do a podcast on choosing the right school and all of that kind of stuff
because I have a lot of experience in that now with Jacob and then the younger kids and like what I'm
going to choose to do with my experience. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative> now knowing that school wasn't for
me or Jacob. Yeah. So, and where we've got very different opinions about it too. So it's gonna be a good
episode.
Krystal (15:49):
We very interesting one I reckon.
Teagan (15:50):
Yeah. Um, but with work this month, I think we're gonna record a whole nother episode on an August
recap business edition because it has been a huge month for us, hasn't it? There's been the launch of
Nibble + Splash, started writing a recipe book, released this podcast, released retreats. And then we've
also got the meal prep catering and cafe to keep our finger on the pulse with, so we're gonna do a bit of an
update on all things VCC as well because it's actually insane the we juggle.
Krystal (16:24):
Oh. We couldn't even fit it into this. Like, and we've kind of spoke about our families, our kids, but even
us personally, like you have been on a huge weight loss journey over the last month or two.
Teagan (16:35):
I know. 15 kgs down now. Yeah. Jacob was my inspiration. You look
Krystal (16:39):
Great and I bet you feel amazing. I
Teagan (16:42):
Feel so much better. I still wanna firm up a little bit. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative> because I've more focused
on my food than my training, which is the opposite of what I used to do. But that's what's worked for me.
And I don't like focusing on a number on the scales. I didn't weigh myself for three years prior to this
because it used to make me really upset when it would go up. Yeah. But I knew like I hit nearly 95 kilos. I
knew that it was
Krystal (17:06):
Time,
Teagan (17:06):
You know? Yes. You don't focus on the number on the scales, but I knew that 95 was too heavy for what
I should be. Yeah. So now I've got down to the 79. Ooh. And I don't care if I stay at 79. Yeah. But I just
wanna firm up a little bit, keep lifting weights and feel good longevity, you know, be able to pop outta
bed. <laugh> carry my kids even when they're 17 <laugh>. Yeah. Piggyback maybe. Yeah. Gosh. But
yeah, it's feels amazing. And so much to share on that as well because I know when I shared it on my
socials, everybody's been asking, how did you do it? Dah dah, dah, dah, dah. And I do have lots to share,
but it's not my focus right now because we've got so much going on with work. It's like I'm head down,
bum up, and I wanna make sure that I can also consistently keep it off and be able to share my long term
goals and Yeah.
Krystal (18:03):
Not the quick
Teagan (18:03):
Fix. Yeah. Not the quick fix. I just wanna make sure I'm on the right page.
Krystal (18:08):
Absolutely. And I'm just over here making sure I can still play netball for the next 20 years.
Teagan (18:12):
<laugh>. Yeah. Well you're in the finals baby.
Krystal (18:14):
Yes. It's finals time for netball. I'm so excited.
Teagan (18:17):
And I don't know. Sorry, I just cut you off. Yeah. But I don't know how the you run. Basically all of
vintage Chef, but then you are so high up in the netball club. You play a coach. Yeah. You're on the
committee. Yeah. Like you organize all this stuff and I'm like, when
Krystal (18:32):
It's my personal give back time though. Yeah. I like having something that's just for me and that's my
little thing, so
Teagan (18:39):
Right. Your brain chops and changes from so many different things. That
Krystal (18:42):
Must be, that must be why I play <laugh>.
Teagan (18:43):
It has
Krystal (18:44):
To be to run, to run it all out. I reckon <laugh>. It's crazy. So yeah, just like Netball's, my thing, my
husband Jake, he plays and manages a band.
Teagan (18:55):
So Hill Valley baby. Yeah.
Krystal (18:57):
I, that is his little baby that he enjoys doing. Are we a groupies? <laugh>? I think I have to be a groupie.
<laugh>. I'll get jealous otherwise of the other groupies. See? There you go babe. I do love you
Teagan (19:09):
<laugh>.
Krystal (19:09):
I do get jealous.
Teagan (19:10):
Don't worry Jake. I'm a groupie too when I'm there. <laugh>.
Krystal (19:13):
But yeah, I just think as adults it's super important that you don't lose your identity and your who you are.
I think there's a lot more to just being a wife or a mom or you know, a business owner or a worker. Just
still make sure that you do something that you enjoy.
Teagan (19:31):
Exactly. That's what Ethan does too, with the footy coaching thing too. I think he's so involved with it and
takes it so seriously and he's so bloody good at it. I'm so proud of him out there. Aw. But yeah, so as well
as trying to manage VCC with me, Ethan's got that and he always manages to go down ministry, a beer
with his dad on a Friday night and he loves it.
Krystal (19:50):
Get the family time in. Yeah.
Teagan (19:52):
And I think we also need to share that Jake sent us a couple of intro musics last night because he is been
making music on his computer.
Krystal (20:00):
I'm putting him on Instagram.
Teagan (20:02):
It's like a Dr. Dre 2001 Splurge.
Krystal (20:06):
<laugh>.
Teagan (20:07):
'cause he knows I do love a bit of Dr. Dre. Oh, it's so good. It was so funny. But yeah, we'll put the link to
that somewhere 'cause it's hilarious. But thanks for listening to us. This is literally just the last month of
our personal life. And just to show that the juggle is real. Uh, yelling at children is completely normal.
Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. And worrying about every single thing and whether you're making the right
decision is normal. And if you wanna hear about all of the stuff that's been going on business wise, which
we fit in between all of that, that's gonna be the next episode. So make sure you check that out. But yeah,
have a lovely day.
Krystal (20:42):
Thanks for listening.
